What tail feature is the American Bobtail cat breed specifically named for?

The story behind the answer

The American Bobtail cat breed is named for its naturally short tail.

Its tail is typically much shorter than that of an ordinary domestic cat, but it is not required to have one exact shape. Depending on the individual, the tail may be nearly straight, slightly curved, or knotted. Breed standards focus on the shortness and natural origin of the feature rather than a single uniform form.

The American Bobtail was developed in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Breeders selected domestic cats with naturally shortened tails and established a larger, wild-looking companion breed. The Manx was not the sole foundation of the American Bobtail, and the breed is not simply a long-haired version of it.

The short tail results from a genetic mutation, but American Bobtails can have either short or longer tails in breeding lines. Their sturdy build and facial markings often add to the impression of a miniature wild cat.
