What system replaced Rocket League's Crates in December 2019?

The story behind the answer

The system that replaced Rocket League’s Crates in December 2019 was Blueprints.

Psyonix introduced Blueprints in the December 4, 2019 Blueprint Update. Unlike Crates, which concealed a random item until opened with a Key, each Blueprint identified the specific cosmetic item it could produce. Players could then spend Credits to build that item, keep the Blueprint, or trade it under the rules available at the time.

The update also changed the surrounding economy. Keys became Credits, existing Crates were converted into unrevealed Blueprints from the same series, and the Item Shop launched alongside the new system. The stated goal was greater transparency, since players could see what they would receive and its crafting price before spending.

A common mix-up is confusing Blueprints with the Item Shop or Rocket Pass. Those were related monetization features, but Blueprints were the direct replacement for Crates. Rocket League later removed player-to-player item trading in December 2023, changing how older Blueprints and items could be exchanged.
