What supervillain do the Minions serve at the start of the first Despicable Me movie?

The story behind the answer

At the start of the first Despicable Me movie, the Minions serve the supervillain Gru. He is the central character of the 2010 animated film and begins the story as an ambitious criminal mastermind planning to steal the Moon.

Gru’s Minions live and work in the underground laboratory beneath his suburban home. They help him build machines, carry out schemes and operate his inventions, although their clumsiness frequently disrupts his plans. Their loyalty is genuine, but they are also easily distracted and obsessed with snacks, especially bananas.

The other options belong to different parts of the franchise. Scarlet Overkill is the Minions’ employer in the 2015 prequel Minions, while El Macho is the main villain of Despicable Me 2. Vector is Gru’s rival in the first film and steals the Great Pyramid, but he is not the Minions’ boss. Gru’s relationship with the Minions later becomes part of his transformation from villain to adoptive father.
