What subtitle was used for J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan?

J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan used the subtitle The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.

The subtitle describes Peter’s defining trait: unlike ordinary children, he refuses to become an adult. Barrie developed Peter through earlier stories and transformed the character into a stage hero for the Christmas season.

The subtitle is sometimes written with slightly different punctuation, such as “The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up,” especially in modern descriptions. The familiar canonical wording, however, is “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.”

The stage play introduced many elements now closely associated with Peter Pan, including Wendy Darling, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys and the journey to Neverland. Barrie later adapted the story into the novel Peter and Wendy, published in 1911. The play and novel are related but are not identical versions of the story.
