What subject did Georgia O'Keeffe paint in her 1932 work Jimson Weed?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 Jimson Weed depicts jimson weed flowers.

The painting, also known as Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1, presents a greatly enlarged white datura blossom against a pale background. O'Keeffe often magnified flowers so viewers had to look at familiar natural forms in an unfamiliar way.

Jimson weed is a common name for Datura stramonium, a poisonous plant found in many parts of North America. O'Keeffe encountered the flowers around her home in New Mexico and repeatedly explored their shapes in paintings and drawings.

The work became especially famous after it sold at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million, including fees. That sale made it the most expensive artwork by a female artist sold at auction at the time, although later sales changed the record.
