What state was Bob Dylan born in?

The story behind the answer

Bob Dylan was born in Minnesota. He was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota.

Dylan spent his earliest years in Duluth before moving with his family to Hibbing, his mother's hometown, when he was about six. Hibbing is on Minnesota's Iron Range, and the region's musical and cultural environment helped shape the young musician. He later adopted the stage name Bob Dylan, inspired partly by his interest in the poetry of Dylan Thomas.

Dylan left Minnesota for New York City in 1961, seeking opportunities in the Greenwich Village folk scene. His debut album, Bob Dylan, followed in 1962. His breakthrough came with The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan in 1963, which included songs such as “Blowin' in the Wind” and “A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall.”

A common mix-up is confusing his birthplace with his childhood hometown. Duluth is where Dylan was born, while Hibbing is where he grew up. Both cities are in Minnesota, so the state answer remains the same even when sources emphasize different parts of his early life.
