What sport was Pete Hornberger once qualified to compete in at the Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Pete Hornberger was once qualified to compete in the Olympics in archery.

Before becoming the producer of TGS, Pete had an absurdly accomplished sporting past. The show’s character history says he was a skilled archer who qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. His opportunity disappeared when President Jimmy Carter announced a U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Pete later says that he also failed to make the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics because he developed “the yips,” a performance problem involving involuntary or disrupted movements. That detail becomes part of the joke when he recognizes similar difficulties in Jenna’s singing.

Archery is easy to confuse with the other sports in the choices, but Pete’s bow-and-arrow skills are repeatedly referenced in the series. In one storyline, he even uses archery equipment to help Kenneth get his application in on time. The character’s wildly varied résumé also includes being a high-school valedictorian and the “fourth guitarist” in Loverboy as a teenager.
