What sport did J.K. Rowling create for the wizarding world in the Harry Potter books?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling created Quidditch as the wizarding sport featured in the Harry Potter books. Players fly on broomsticks while pursuing several balls, including the Quaffle, Bludgers, and the Golden Snitch.

A Quidditch match is played by teams of seven players. Three Chasers move the Quaffle through hoops, two Beaters protect teammates and hit Bludgers, one Keeper guards the hoops, and one Seeker searches for the Golden Snitch. Catching the Snitch traditionally ends the match and awards 150 points.

Rowling has said that the name was inspired by the fictional location Queerditch Marsh. The sport’s rules and terminology are presented as part of the wizarding world’s history and culture, especially in Quidditch Through the Ages.

Real-world players later adapted the game into a non-magical field sport, originally often called Muggle Quidditch. It uses modified equipment and rules because players cannot fly. The fictional game should therefore not be confused with its real-world adaptation.
