Answer
515.3 km/h
What speed did the TGV Atlantique reach in its 1990 world record? It reached 515.3 km/h. The record was set on 18 May 1990 by modified TGV Atlantique trainset 325 during SNCF testing in France.
The attempt formed part of the TGV 117 and TGV 140 test programs, which ran from November 1989 to May 1990. Engineers modified the train to cope with extreme speeds, including changes to its power, aerodynamics, wheels, electrical equipment and train formation. The test set was shortened and given substantially greater power than a normal passenger train.
Trainset 325 reached 515.3 km/h, or about 320.3 mph, on the LGV Atlantique near Vendôme. This was a test speed rather than a regular passenger-service speed. Commercial TGV operations were designed around much lower speeds, balancing acceleration, energy use, comfort, maintenance and timetable reliability.
A frequent mix-up is the later TGV V150 record. In April 2007, another heavily modified TGV reached 574.8 km/h, surpassing the 1990 mark. Thus 574.8 km/h belongs to the later 2007 record, while 515.3 km/h is specifically the TGV Atlantique record from 1990.
