What species is Pikachu classified as in the Pokémon series?

Pikachu is classified as the Mouse Pokémon in the Pokémon series.

The classification reflects Pikachu’s compact body, rounded ears, small nose, and long tail. It is also classified as an Electric-type Pokémon, allowing it to generate electricity through the red cheek sacs on its face.

Pikachu first appeared in the 1996 Pokémon Red and Green games, later released internationally as Pokémon Red and Blue. Its popularity expanded dramatically when it became Ash Ketchum’s companion in the television series.

Pikachu is often described simply as a yellow mouse, but “Mouse Pokémon” is the formal species category used in Pokédex descriptions. Pichu, Pikachu’s pre-evolution, was introduced later in Pokémon Gold and Silver, while Raichu is Pikachu’s evolution.
