What Sonic Youth member has a side project called Free Kitten?

The Sonic Youth member with a side project called Free Kitten is Kim Gordon. She formed the alternative-rock group with Julia Cafritz, formerly of Pussy Galore, in the early 1990s.

Free Kitten gave Gordon a separate outlet for noisier, more improvisational, and more collaborative music outside Sonic Youth. The project’s lineup also included musicians such as Yoshimi P-We of the Boredoms and Mark Ibold of Pavement at different points in its history.

Gordon was a founding member of Sonic Youth, the influential New York alternative-rock band she formed with guitarist Thurston Moore and others. Within Sonic Youth, she played bass and guitar and contributed distinctive vocals, helping shape the band’s combination of art rock, no wave, punk, and experimental noise.

Free Kitten is sometimes mistakenly described as a solo project because Gordon is its best-known Sonic Youth connection. It is more accurately a collaborative side band. Gordon has also worked in other projects, including Body/Head, and has released music under her own name.
