“Our Town” from Pixar’s Cars won the 2006 Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
The song was written and performed by Randy Newman, whose score and songs helped give Cars its reflective Americana atmosphere. “Our Town” plays over the film’s closing credits and was written to evoke the history and changing fortunes of small American communities.
The Golden Globe win was a notable achievement because Cars competed in a category that included songs from live-action films as well as animation. The song also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song, although it did not win that award.
A frequent mix-up is “Life Is a Highway,” which is strongly associated with Cars through Rascal Flatts’ energetic recording. That song is featured prominently in the film, but it was not the Golden Globe-winning song.
