“Our Town” from Pixar’s Cars was nominated for Best Original Song at the 79th Academy Awards.
Randy Newman wrote “Our Town,” which plays over the film’s closing credits. The song reflects Radiator Springs’ history, its decline after the interstate bypass, and the possibility of renewal after Lightning McQueen reconnects the town with the wider racing world.
The nomination recognized the song at the 2007 Academy Awards, where it competed in the Best Original Song category. “Our Town” did not win; the award went to “I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth.
“Life Is a Highway” and “Real Gone” are also strongly associated with Cars, but they are not the film’s Oscar-nominated song. “Route 66” is another musical reference connected to the movie, yet the Academy nomination specifically went to Newman’s “Our Town.”
