Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead
Answer
Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead
The Munchkins sing “Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead” after the Wicked Witch of the East dies in The Wizard of Oz.
The song appears early in the 1939 film, after Dorothy’s farmhouse lands in Munchkinland and kills the Wicked Witch of the East. Glinda announces that the witch is dead, and the Munchkins celebrate with the march-like number before the Lullaby League and Lollipop Guild make their entrances.
Harold Arlen composed the music and E. Y. Harburg wrote the lyrics. In the film, the song is part of a larger musical sequence that also includes “Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are,” “It Really Was No Miracle,” “We Represent the Lullaby League” and “We Welcome You to Munchkinland.”
A frequent source of confusion is the Wicked Witch of the West. After Dorothy melts that witch near the end of the film, a reprise beginning “Hail! Hail! The Witch Is Dead” was planned but cut. Thus, the familiar Munchkin performance belongs to the earlier death of the Wicked Witch of the East.
