Who designed the costumes for the 1939 film?

The story behind the answer

Adrian designed the costumes for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

The designer was Adrian Adolph Greenburg, professionally known simply as Adrian and sometimes credited as Gilbert Adrian. As MGM’s head costume designer from 1928 to 1941, he shaped the screen wardrobes of major stars including Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Katharine Hepburn, and Norma Shearer.

For The Wizard of Oz, Adrian created the film’s distinctive costumes, including Judy Garland’s celebrated ruby slippers. The shoes were designed with red sequins rather than the silver slippers described in L. Frank Baum’s original book, because the Technicolor production benefited from a more vivid visual centerpiece.

Adrian left MGM in 1941 to establish his own fashion house and later worked in couture and ready-to-wear design. His Oz work is sometimes confused with Edith Head or Walter Plunkett, but those designers were associated with other major Hollywood productions, not the primary costume design of this film.
