What solid coat color gives the Havana Brown cat breed its name?

The story behind the answer

The Havana Brown cat breed is named for its solid chocolate-brown coat.

The breed has a uniformly brown appearance, including its short coat and whiskers. Breed standards also emphasize the warm, rich color and the contrast created by its vivid green eyes. The name refers to the resemblance between the coat and Havana cigars, rather than to the breed’s place of origin.

Despite its name, the modern Havana Brown was developed in England during the 1950s. Breeders used Siamese cats and solid-colored domestic cats in its development. The breed later became established in North America, where it remains relatively uncommon.

The Havana Brown should not be confused with a brown Burmese or an Oriental Shorthair in a brown color. Those breeds can share similar body lines or coloring, but the Havana Brown is recognized as a separate breed with its own history and standard.
