A snack that is simply a bagel topped with pizza ingredients is a pizza bagel.

The basic version uses a halved or flattened bagel topped with tomato or marinara sauce, cheese and often toppings such as pepperoni or vegetables. It is then heated until the cheese melts, creating a compact snack that combines the chewy texture of a bagel with the flavors of pizza.

The dish has more than one claimed origin. The earliest known mention appeared in 1952, when the Miami News credited Arthur Adler with creating it at a hotel in Miami Beach. Anthony DeMauro is also credited with inventing a version in 1957 at Amster’s Bagel Bakery near Cleveland. Later, a California store clerk named Bruce Treitman offered a flattened bagel with marinara and mozzarella in 1974.

Pizza bagels should not be confused with pizza rolls, which are filled dough snacks, or garlic knots, which are tied pieces of seasoned bread dough. Frozen mini pizza bagels also inspired commercial products such as Bagel Bites.
