McDonald’s introduced “I’m Lovin’ It” in 2003 as its global advertising slogan.
The campaign began internationally in September 2003 and was designed to give McDonald’s a single, consistent phrase across markets. Its advertising used the slogan alongside a distinctive five-note musical motif, often called the “ba da ba ba ba” jingle.
The campaign was notable because McDonald’s had previously relied on different slogans and advertising approaches in different countries. “I’m Lovin’ It” connected the brand with enjoyment, immediacy, and everyday eating rather than describing a particular menu item.
The phrase is sometimes confused with earlier McDonald’s lines such as “You Deserve a Break Today,” which was introduced in 1971. The 2003 campaign was a branding platform, not the launch name of a sandwich or a restaurant format.
