What shared stage surname did Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy adopt?

The story behind the answer

Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy adopted the shared stage surname Ramone.

The four musicians were members of the New York punk band the Ramones, whose deliberately uniform names made them appear like a single fictional family. Their stage identities were Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, and Tommy Ramone, even though they were not related.

The band formed in Queens in 1974 and became central figures in the emerging New York punk scene. The surname was already being used by bassist Douglas Colvin, who performed as Dee Dee Ramone; John Cummings and Jeffrey Hyman subsequently became Johnny and Joey Ramone. Drummer Tommy Ramone also used the name.

The surname is commonly linked to Paul McCartney, who briefly used “Paul Ramon” as a pseudonym in the early 1960s. Strummer, Vicious, and Rotten were associated with other punk musicians, notably Joe Strummer, Sid Vicious, and Johnny Rotten, so they are recognizable but incorrect alternatives.
