What shape is the Pontiac brand emblem commonly known as?

The story behind the answer

The Pontiac brand emblem is commonly known as the Arrowhead.

Pontiac adopted the red Arrowhead as its principal emblem in the 1950s. The sharply pointed shape was designed to look distinctive on grilles and bodywork, and it became one of the most recognizable symbols in American automotive styling. Pontiac often placed a silver or colored star inside the Arrowhead.

The emblem’s pointed form helped support Pontiac’s performance-oriented image, especially during the muscle-car era. Models such as the GTO, Firebird, and Trans Am carried Pontiac badges in several variations, while the basic Arrowhead remained the identifying mark of the division.

The symbol is sometimes confused with a Native American arrow or with a generic spearhead. Pontiac’s name and earlier marketing also drew on Indigenous imagery, but the emblem itself is conventionally identified by its geometric Arrowhead shape. General Motors discontinued the Pontiac brand in 2010, ending production of new Pontiac vehicles.
