What self-moving device did Leonardo da Vinci design for theatrical effects?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a self-propelled cart for theatrical effects.

The cart appears in drawings from around 1478 to 1480 and is powered by coiled springs hidden inside its body. When the springs were wound, gears transferred their energy to the wheels. Steering could be set in advance through a programmable mechanism, allowing the cart to follow a predetermined path rather than being remotely controlled.

The device is frequently described as an early robot or programmable machine, although it was not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense. Leonardo may have intended it for court celebrations, where a moving object could create a dramatic surprise. The cart’s exact original purpose is not recorded with certainty, so descriptions of its theatrical role remain an informed historical interpretation.

A working reconstruction was produced in 2006 by Italian researchers. The reconstruction showed that the design could move, although details of the surviving drawings require interpretation. It is separate from Leonardo’s later mechanical lion, another ceremonial automaton associated with court spectacle.
