Leonardo da Vinci designed a rotating crane to help lift heavy materials at construction sites.
His engineering notebooks contain crane designs using a vertical mast, a rotating arm, ropes, pulleys, and winding mechanisms. These parts allowed a worker to raise a load and move it horizontally without carrying it by hand. Leonardo studied such machines in the context of building projects, where lifting stone and other heavy materials was a central practical problem.
Leonardo did not invent the crane itself; lifting machines had existed in the ancient world. His importance lies in analyzing and refining mechanisms, including gears, winches, and counterweights. A crane differs from a catapult because its purpose is controlled lifting and placement, not launching a projectile. The drawings show Leonardo applying mechanical principles to construction equipment.
