What sailing trophy is sponsored by Louis Vuitton for the America's Cup?

The story behind the answer

The sailing trophy sponsored by Louis Vuitton for the America’s Cup is the Louis Vuitton Cup.

It was created for the Challenger Selection Series, the competition that determines which yacht earns the right to challenge the defending America’s Cup holder. Louis Vuitton first sponsored the series in 1983, when Australia II won the inaugural event and went on to defeat the New York Yacht Club’s Liberty.

The Louis Vuitton Cup is not the America’s Cup itself. That distinction is a common source of confusion: the Louis Vuitton Cup belongs to the challengers, while the America’s Cup is the final match between the challenger and defender. The event was also known by other names during periods when different sponsors were involved, including the Louis Vuitton Challenger’s Trophy in 2017 and the Prada Cup in 2021.

Louis Vuitton resumed title sponsorship for the 2024 challenger series, restoring the historic name. Five Louis Vuitton Cup winners have subsequently won the America’s Cup.
