In “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” Princess Mia is about to claim the position of Queen of Genovia.
The 2004 Disney sequel follows Mia Thermopolis as she returns to Genovia and prepares to succeed her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi. Although Mia is still officially a princess at the beginning, the story makes clear that she is next in line for the throne.
Her succession is complicated by an old Genovian law requiring an unmarried woman to marry before becoming queen. Viscount Mabrey challenges Mia’s right to rule and promotes his nephew, Nicholas Deveraux, as a possible male heir. Mia ultimately discovers a legal way to become queen without marrying, reinforcing that the central conflict concerns her accession to the throne—not merely a royal engagement.
A common mix-up is calling Mia the “Princess of Genovia” as the answer. That is her existing title; the new royal position she is preparing to assume is queen. Queen Clarisse is the reigning monarch during much of the film, while Mia is her heir apparent.
