What rotating machine did Leonardo da Vinci propose for spinning and twisting fibers?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci proposed a spinning machine for spinning and twisting fibers.

The machine was intended to mechanize textile work by coordinating several actions that a spinner normally performed by hand. A rotating mechanism could draw out fibers, twist them into thread, and wind the finished thread onto a spindle. Combining these movements was a major engineering challenge because the tension had to remain controlled while the material moved continuously.

Leonardo’s textile designs reflect the importance of cloth production in Renaissance Italy. Silk and wool industries employed many workers, and machines that increased regularity or output could have significant commercial value. His notebooks contain studies of spinning and winding mechanisms, though surviving drawings do not establish that every proposed machine was built or entered factory use.

The machine should not be confused with the spinning jenny, developed in eighteenth-century Britain, or with a simple spinning wheel. Leonardo’s proposals belong to an earlier period of experimentation with mechanized textile production.
