What human-shaped machine did Leonardo da Vinci sketch with moving arms and a jaw?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci sketched a robot knight with moving arms and a moving jaw.

The human-shaped machine was designed around 1495, during Leonardo’s work for Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Its internal system used cables, pulleys, gears, and a supporting frame to reproduce selected human movements. The armor-like exterior gave the machine the appearance of a medieval knight.

Leonardo’s drawings were rediscovered in the twentieth century, and engineers later built reconstructions to test how the mechanism might have worked. The machine was probably intended as a court entertainment or demonstration of mechanical knowledge, rather than as an autonomous combat robot.

The robot knight is different from Leonardo’s mechanical lion, another automaton associated with court spectacle. It is also not a modern programmable robot: it had no electronic controls, sensors, or independent decision-making. Its importance lies in the mechanical imitation of human motion and in Leonardo’s systematic study of anatomy, leverage, and transmission.
