What role did Beyoncé play in the 2019 remake of The Lion King?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé voiced Nala in the 2019 remake of The Lion King.

The 2019 film is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney’s 1994 traditionally animated movie. Beyoncé provided the voice for Nala, the lioness who becomes Simba’s close companion and later queen. Donald Glover voiced Simba, while James Earl Jones returned as Mufasa.

Beyoncé also contributed original music to the project. She curated and executive-produced The Lion King: The Gift, an album inspired by the film and featuring artists from Africa and the African diaspora. Her song “Spirit” appeared in both the film’s musical promotion and the album project.

Nala is sometimes confused with other lion characters from the story. Sarabi is Simba’s mother, Mufasa’s queen, while Kiara is Simba and Nala’s daughter in later Lion King stories. Shenzi is a hyena, not a lion. Beyoncé’s role in the 2019 film was a voice performance rather than an on-screen appearance.
