What resolution did the original PlayStation VR display for each eye?

The story behind the answer

The original PlayStation VR displayed 960 × 1080 pixels for each eye.

Sony’s first PlayStation VR headset used a single 5.7-inch OLED panel with a total resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. Because the image was divided between the two eyes, each eye received 960 × 1080 pixels. This per-eye figure is the standard way VR headset resolution is reported.

The headset launched in October 2016 for the PlayStation 4. It connected to the console through an external processing unit and commonly used the PlayStation Camera for tracking. Some games also supported PlayStation Move controllers, while others used the DualShock 4.

The number is often confused with the total panel resolution or with the higher resolution of PlayStation VR2. The second-generation headset, released in 2023, uses a much sharper 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, so the two systems should not be treated as having the same display specification.
