Johto was the region introduced in Generation II of the Pokémon video game series.
Johto is the main setting of Pokémon Gold and Silver and their enhanced version, Pokémon Crystal. In the games' fictional geography, Johto lies west of Kanto, the region from the original Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow titles.
The region is based largely on Japan's Kansai and Tōkai areas, which influenced its towns, landmarks, temples, and traditional visual style. Players begin their journey with Professor Elm and eventually challenge Johto's Gyms before facing the Elite Four and the regional Champion.
Johto is unusual because the games allow players to return to Kanto after completing the main Johto adventure. That post-game journey revisits the earlier region three years after the events of the first-generation games. Kanto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh are all Pokémon regions, but they belong to other generations.
