Kanto is the setting of the Pokémon Red and Green video games.
The player begins in Pallet Town and travels through Kanto to collect Gym Badges, challenge the Pokémon League, and complete the Pokédex. Major locations include Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Celadon City, and Saffron City.
Kanto introduced the first generation of Pokémon and its eight Gym Leaders. The region’s geography and landmarks were later revisited in Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Gold and Silver, and several remakes. Its placement in the wider Pokémon world also loosely reflects Japan’s real Kantō region.
Kanto is often confused with Johto because the two regions appear together in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Johto is the neighboring region introduced in Generation II, while Kanto is the original setting. The distinction is useful when identifying which locations and Gym Leaders belong to the franchise’s first games.
