What region is featured in the original Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow games?

The story behind the answer

Kanto is the region featured in the original Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow games.

Kanto is the setting for Generation I and contains locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Lavender Town, and the Pokémon League. Players travel across the region while earning Gym Badges, completing the Pokédex, and confronting Team Rocket.

The name can confuse international readers because Kanto is also the name of a real region in Japan. Pokémon’s fictional Kanto is inspired by Japan’s actual Kantō region, but the game map reorganizes geography and adds fictional towns, routes, islands, and landmarks.

Johto followed in Pokémon Gold and Silver, while Hoenn and Sinnoh appeared in later generations. Kanto therefore identifies both the first major Pokémon setting and the home region of the original 151 species.
