What region is featured in Pokémon Sword and Shield?

Galar is the region featured in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

The eighth-generation games take place in Galar, a large land inspired by the United Kingdom. Its geography includes industrial cities, rural routes, snowy areas, seaside locations, and stadiums used for major Pokémon battles. The region’s design reflects the United Kingdom’s varied landscapes and cultural imagery.

Players enter the Gym Challenge, an organized sporting event in which Trainers earn eight Gym Badges before competing in the Champion Cup. Leon, the reigning Champion, is presented as an undefeated star of Galar’s battle-focused culture.

The Wild Area is one of Galar’s defining features. It is a broad explorable zone where Pokémon appear in the overworld, weather changes which species are available, and players can find dens for Max Raid Battles. Galar is sometimes confused with Kalos, the French-inspired setting of Pokémon X and Y, but the two regions belong to different generations.
