What record-setting 1932 Georgia O’Keeffe painting features a large white flower?

The story behind the answer

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 is Georgia O’Keeffe’s record-setting 1932 flower painting.

The large white datura image sold at Sotheby’s in New York in 2014 for $44.4 million, including the buyer’s premium. That sale made it the highest price paid at auction for a work by a female artist at the time.

The painting’s fame comes from both its scale and its auction history. O’Keeffe’s flower paintings are often interpreted symbolically, but she rejected attempts to reduce them to one fixed meaning. The work should not be confused with Black Iris, Oriental Poppies, or Red Canna, other well-known flower paintings by O’Keeffe.
