What real-life railway inspired the Skarloey Railway?

The story behind the answer

The real-life railway that inspired the Skarloey Railway is the Talyllyn Railway.

Wilbert Awdry visited the Talyllyn Railway in Wales with his family in August 1952, during the line’s early preservation era. Its unusual narrow-gauge setting, small steam locomotives and volunteer-run operation provided the model for the fictional railway on the Island of Sodor. Several Skarloey Railway engines also have real-world counterparts on the Talyllyn.

The connection is especially strong because Awdry later volunteered on the railway. Incidents he experienced there were adapted into Railway Series stories, making the Talyllyn more than a visual inspiration: it also supplied story ideas and railway atmosphere. The locomotive Talyllyn itself helped inspire the fictional engine Skarloey.

A common mix-up is to choose the Ffestiniog Railway, another famous Welsh narrow-gauge line associated with The Railway Series. It did influence other Sodor locations and engines, but the Skarloey Railway is specifically based on the Talyllyn Railway. The real line opened in 1865 to carry slate and became the world’s first preserved heritage railway operated by volunteers in 1951.
