What real car model is Pixar’s Luigi in the Cars movies?

The story behind the answer

Pixar’s Luigi is a 1959 Fiat 500 in the Cars movies.

Luigi owns Luigi’s Casa Della Tires in Radiator Springs and is one of the town’s most enthusiastic residents. His character reflects the affection many Italian car enthusiasts have for small Fiat automobiles, especially the Nuova 500 introduced in the late 1950s.

The Fiat 500 was a compact city car designed for postwar Italy. Its small size and economical engineering made it an important part of Italian motoring history. In the films, Luigi’s Italian identity is reinforced by his tire shop, his admiration for Ferrari, and his friendship with Guido.

Luigi should not be confused with Guido, who is a small forklift and Luigi’s assistant. The model identification also differs from the real vehicles inspiring other Cars characters, including Sally Carrera’s Porsche 911 and Fillmore’s Volkswagen Type 2 bus.
