Answer
Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic
What rare Bugatti model does Ralph Lauren own? Ralph Lauren owns a Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic.
The car is one of the most celebrated prewar automobiles ever built. Designed largely under Jean Bugatti’s direction, the Atlantic combined a low, aerodynamic coupé body with a dramatic riveted dorsal seam running from the roof toward the rear.
The Type 57S designation refers to “Surbaissé,” or lowered, while “C” denotes “Compresseur,” the French term for a supercharger. The car used a supercharged 3.3-liter straight-eight engine and was capable of remarkable performance for the late 1930s.
Lauren purchased chassis 57591 in 1988 and commissioned a major restoration. Originally sapphire blue, it was repainted black at his request. It won Best of Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 1990. The model is sometimes confused with the far more common Bugatti Type 35, Chiron, or Veyron, but those are entirely different cars and eras.
