First transcontinental railroad
Answer
First transcontinental railroad
The first transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit in 1869.
The route connected the existing eastern rail network with the Pacific coast. The Union Pacific Railroad built westward from Omaha, while the Central Pacific Railroad built eastward from Sacramento. Their tracks met at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory on May 10, 1869.
A ceremonial golden spike marked the joining of the rails. The completed connection sharply reduced travel time between the Missouri River and California, replacing much longer journeys by wagon, stagecoach, or ship. It also strengthened commercial links across the United States and encouraged settlement and migration.
The railroad’s construction depended heavily on immigrant labor, including large numbers of Chinese workers on the Central Pacific and Irish workers on the Union Pacific. The line was not a single company’s route: it was a linked system built by two major railroads under federal support and land grants.
