What racetrack is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona named after?

The story behind the answer

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is named after Daytona International Speedway.

The connection began with Daytona Beach, Florida, a major centre of automobile racing in the early twentieth century. Rolex became the official timekeeper of Daytona International Speedway in 1962, and the racing association helped inspire the name of its new chronograph, introduced in 1963.

The Daytona was designed for racing drivers. Its chronograph measures elapsed time, while the tachymetric scale on the bezel can be used to calculate average speed over a known distance. The watch’s name is therefore tied to Daytona’s motor-racing identity, not to the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans or Indianapolis.

There is a small historical wrinkle: early examples of the reference 6239 did not always have “Daytona” printed on the dial, and some collectors used the nickname “Le Mans.” Rolex later made the Daytona name central to the model, which remains associated with the Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance race.
