Treebeard belongs to the Ent race in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Treebeard, also known as Fangorn, is one of the oldest living beings in Middle-earth. Ents are tree-like shepherds who protect forests and watch over the trees. Treebeard leads the Ents of Fangorn Forest during the events of the War of the Ring.
Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard after escaping from the Orcs who captured them. Their conversations help awaken the Ents’ concern about Saruman’s destruction of forests. The Ents eventually march on Isengard, an important turning point in the story.
Ents are not simply talking trees. Tolkien presents them as a distinct people with their own languages, history, and fading population. The Entwives, who cultivated gardens and farms, disappeared long before the main events of the narrative.
