What PvE mode was released before Battle Royale?

The story behind the answer

What PvE mode was released before Battle Royale? The answer is Save the World. It was Fortnite’s original player-versus-environment mode, built around cooperative missions, resource gathering, construction, and battles against zombie-like creatures called Husks.

Save the World entered paid early access on July 25, 2017, for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Fortnite Battle Royale followed later in September 2017 as a separate free-to-play mode. Although Battle Royale eventually became the far more prominent part of the Fortnite brand, Save the World supplied much of the original game’s building, crafting, and cooperative foundation.

A common mix-up is treating Creative or Arena as earlier Fortnite modes. Creative launched in December 2018, while Arena was a later competitive format within Battle Royale. Frostnite was also a Save the World event, not the original PvE mode itself. Save the World’s campaign has players defending objectives, building defenses, and completing missions across a storm-ravaged world.
