Bateria is the Portuguese term for the percussion ensemble that drives a Rio samba school’s parade.
A bateria supplies the rhythmic foundation for the school’s samba-enredo, coordinating the singing, dancing, and movement of the procession. It typically includes instruments such as surdos, caixas, repiniques, tamborims, cuícas, and agogôs. Each instrument contributes a different layer to the overall groove.
The bateria is led by a mestre de bateria, whose role includes directing rehearsals, controlling changes in rhythm, and coordinating stops or special rhythmic effects. The ensemble’s discipline is crucial because a samba school must keep its parade synchronized while moving along the Sambadrome route.
Bateria should not be confused with ala, which means a themed group or wing of participants. Enredo is the parade’s theme and narrative, while comissão de frente is the opening judging group.
