What outlaw of the American West used the alias William H. Bonney?
Answer
Billy the Kid
Answer
Billy the Kid
Billy the Kid was the American West outlaw who used the alias William H. Bonney.
He was born Henry McCarty around 1859, probably in New York City, and later used several names, including William H. Bonney and Kid Antrim. His short life became heavily mythologized through dime novels, newspapers, and later films.
Billy the Kid became involved in New Mexico’s Lincoln County War, a violent conflict between rival business factions. He joined the Regulators, a group formed after the killing of merchant John Tunstall. The conflict helped make him one of the most recognizable figures of the frontier era.
Sheriff Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid near Fort Sumner, New Mexico, in 1881. The outlaw’s reported death age was about 21, although details of his early life remain uncertain. He is sometimes confused with other famous outlaws such as Jesse James, whose career was centered farther east.
