What other band did Sponge evolve from?

Sponge evolved from the Detroit rock band Loudhouse. Several future Sponge members had already played together in Loudhouse before forming Sponge in the early 1990s.

Loudhouse was active from 1989 to 1992 and featured vocalist Kenny Mugwump, drummer Vinnie Dombroski, bassist Tim Cross, and guitarist Mike Cross. Joey Mazzola joined near the end of the band’s run. After Loudhouse ended, Dombroski, the Cross brothers, and Mazzola stayed together and developed a new project.

The lineup changed during that transition. Dombroski moved from drums to lead vocals, and Jimmy Paluzzi joined as drummer. The group considered several names before becoming Sponge, a band whose sound moved toward alternative rock and post-grunge.

Loudhouse released one full-length album and appeared on the soundtrack to the 1991 film "Point Break." Sponge later reached a much wider audience with songs including "Plowed," "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)," and "Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina)." The relationship is therefore best described as a direct spinoff or evolution, not merely an influence.
