The date, 11/11, consists of four ones and was originally associated with single people in China. Alibaba turned the occasion into a major shopping promotion in 2009, when a small group of merchants participated in its first large-scale event.

Other Chinese and international retailers later created their own promotions around the same date. As a result, the term can refer both to the cultural occasion and to a broad retail period involving many platforms.

Singles’ Day is often compared with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but it has a different origin and calendar date. Its name is not a reference to marital status requirements for shoppers.
