The water cycle is the ongoing process that constantly recycles water through Earth’s atmosphere, land, oceans, and living things. Water evaporates from oceans, lakes, rivers, and soil, while plants release water vapor through transpiration.
As moist air rises and cools, condensation forms clouds. Water then returns to Earth as precipitation—rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Some precipitation runs across the surface into streams and rivers, while some infiltrates the ground and replenishes soil moisture and groundwater. Eventually, much of this water flows back toward the oceans or returns to the atmosphere, continuing the cycle.
The cycle does not mean every water molecule follows the same path or moves at the same speed. A raindrop may quickly run into a river, while groundwater can remain underground for years, centuries, or longer. Glaciers and ice sheets also store water for long periods. Solar energy drives evaporation, and gravity pulls precipitation downhill. A frequent misconception is that the cycle creates new water; instead, it redistributes and changes water among solid, liquid, and gaseous states. Earth’s total water supply is broadly conserved, although access to usable freshwater varies greatly.
