Answer
olive oil
What oil is traditionally associated with the Hanukkah miracle? Olive oil is traditionally associated with it.
According to rabbinic tradition, after the Maccabees reclaimed and purified the Temple in Jerusalem, they found only one sealed container of uncontaminated oil. It was believed to contain enough oil to keep the Temple menorah burning for one day, yet it lasted for eight days—long enough to prepare a fresh supply.
The oil story is recorded in the Talmud, especially Shabbat 21b, several centuries after the events of the Maccabean revolt. The earlier Books of the Maccabees describe the Temple’s rededication but do not present the familiar miracle in the same form.
Olive oil was especially significant because the Temple menorah traditionally used pure olive oil. Modern Hanukkah observance often uses candles, but some families use oil lamps with olive oil. Foods fried in oil, such as latkes and sufganiyot, also recall the holiday’s oil symbolism.
