What object does Frodo Baggins carry to Mordor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins carries the One Ring to Mordor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The One Ring was created by Sauron in the Second Age to control the other Rings of Power and extend his influence over their bearers. Its destruction is necessary to defeat Sauron permanently, so Frodo must take it to Mount Doom, where it was forged.

The Ring’s power makes the journey dangerous. It can grant invisibility to ordinary wearers, but it also exerts a corrupting influence and reveals its wearer to Sauron’s servants. Frodo inherits it from Bilbo, who found it beneath the Misty Mountains.

The One Ring is sometimes confused with other famous objects in Tolkien’s world, such as the Arkenstone or the Silmarils. Those artifacts belong to different stories and have different histories.
