The object that became DashCon’s most famous meme after a canceled panel was the ball pit.
DashCon was a 2014 fan convention aimed largely at Tumblr users, held in Schaumburg, Illinois. When the Welcome to Night Vale panel was canceled, organizers offered affected ticket holders raffle tickets, admission to a concert, and an “extra hour” in the convention’s small ball pit instead of refunds. That unusual compensation became the event’s defining image.
The ball pit itself was not the original cause of DashCon’s problems. The convention was already facing criticism over planning, attendance, hotel-payment disputes, and canceled guest appearances. Online jokes transformed the pit and its extra hour into a shorthand for the convention’s wider organizational chaos. Common mix-ups include identifying the canceled event as a general panel dispute or assuming the pit was a planned headline attraction; it was an ordinary feature that became famous because of the reimbursement offer.
