The Khaki Scout troop in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom is Troop 55.
Troop 55 is the scouting group from which Sam Shakusky runs away at the beginning of the film. Its members camp on the fictional island of New Penzance under Scout Master Randy Ward, played by Edward Norton. The troop’s uniforms, badges, tents, and orderly camp routines are among the film’s carefully designed period details.
The number is easy to overlook because the story focuses more on Sam and Suzy’s escape than on the organization’s official name. Nevertheless, “Troop 55” appears as part of the scouting setting and helps establish the mid-1960s world of the film.
This detail should not be confused with the island’s name, New Penzance, or with Camp Ivanhoe, the camp where the scouts stay. Those are separate pieces of the film’s fictional geography and scouting structure.
