Woodstock 1994 was commonly nicknamed “Mudstock” because heavy rain turned the festival grounds into mud. The event took place at Winston Farm in Saugerties, New York, from August 12 to 14, 1994.
The festival marked the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock. Its lineup mixed performers associated with the 1969 event and major artists from the alternative-rock, hip-hop, and popular-music scenes of the 1990s.
Rainfall created difficult conditions for attendees, who slipped and played in the mud. That visual scene became one of the event’s most recognizable features and led newspapers and audiences to use the “Mudstock” nickname.
Woodstock 1994 was not held at the original 1969 site near Bethel. It also differed in its commercial organization and media presentation. A 50th-anniversary Woodstock planned for 2019 was ultimately canceled, so the 1994 event remains the principal officially staged 25th-anniversary celebration.
